In 1962 he directed the American premiere of Arthur Kopit's mordant mother-son comedy, Oh, Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You In the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad and in 1963 a production of Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children starring Anne Bancroft.
